Buying books for small children means you will not be short of choice but there are things that will help you with that choice. The things to keep in mind when buying books for young children

  • Colorful pictures that help to tell the story.
  • Is the book suitable for the age range and ability of the child.
  • Does the book need to be sturdy, such as buying a board book for babies.
  • Is the story one that you will happily read to the child every night if it becomes its favorite book?
  • Are you looking for a book that has a learning element to the story line?

Just a few hints about the above points, in reverse order:

Most children's books have a learning element to them even if it is so 'subtle' that you might not notice it.

A child learns how a book works by seeing you pick up a book, turn it the right way up and start to read it by opening the cover and beginning to read from the first page.

The rise and fall of your voice as you read and as you pause at a full stop or as you wait for the response from the child is all part of the education about reading that books give us, possibly before we are even able to talk.

Do n't despair if the child's favorite book is the one you like the least and you think is a waste of time. The child has a book that is special to it, it is on its way to becoming a reader and probably a book lover too.

Great hub and great tips! You are right, it does have to be fun for the grown up to read too. Kids do learn a ton from being read to.

Very helpful tips in picking out children's stories. I love to read to children. I started with my own two and now read to my four grandkids. Nice job. Rated useful.

Thanks Denise for visiting this page and for your comment too, reading to children is enjoyable for both adult and child. I think it is also a great way to get a sit down and get your 'breath back' when they are having a 'lively day'.
